Introduction of Institute for tropical technology and main field of research
This report introduces Institute for Tropical Technology (ITT), one of national institutes belonging to Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology. Now, ITT has specialized departments related to main R-D fields of corrosion and protection of metals, non-metals, polymers, rubber and natural resins, protective coatings, ceramics, electric – and electronic engineering, environment antipollution as well as some natural testing stations in the provinces of Vietnam territory. The report also presents R-D recent results of ITT such as coatings and surface layers with high quality and durability in the tropical climate condition, inhibitors friendly to environment, nano-structural materials, nanocomposites, biodegradable polymers, varistor-ZnO and PZT ceramics using to protect equipment and high voltage network against lightning… Some advanced technologies of ITT have been applied into industrial fields. In coming time, ITT will concentrate to develop protective coatings friendly to environment, nano-structural materials, bio-medical materials, new generation of varistor-ZnO and PZT ceramics, conservation material and technology, combined technology for environment antipollution, prediction of service life-time of the materials. ITT has international cooperation in research and education with foreign colleagues at universities, institutes, and centers in France, Belgium, Japan, Korea, USA, Germany, Thailand, Australia …

Synthesis of silane modified nano ZnO and application in polyurethane coating
Nanosized ZnO modified by 2-aminoethyl-3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APS) was prepared using the precipitation method. Modified nano ZnO by silane (ZnO-APS) was characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM and UV-Vis measurements. The influence of nano ZnO-APS on UV resistance and corrosion resistance of polyurethane coatings were investigated by QUV test, gloss measurement and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results show that nano ZnO-APS has spherical structure with particle size around 10-15 nm. Nano ZnO improved the UV resistance and corrosion resistance of the PU coating and surface treatment by APS enhanced the effect of nano ZnO. The presence of nano ZnO-APS at 0.1wt% concentration significantly improved the UV resistance and corrosion resistance of polyurethane coating.

Controlling the electrodeposition, morphology and structure of hydroxyapatite coating on 316L stainless steel
Hydroxyapatite (HAp) coatings were prepared on 316L stainless steel (316LSS) substrates by electrochemical deposition in solutions containing Ca(NO3)2·4H2O and NH4H2PO4 at different electrolyte concentrations. Along with the effect of precursor concentration, the influence of temperature and H2O2 content on the morphology, structure and composition of the coating was thoroughly discussed with the help of X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The in vitro tests in simulated body fluids (SBF) were carried out and then the morphological and structural changes were estimated by SEM and electrochemical techniques (open circuit potential, polarization curves, Nyquist and Bode spectra measurements). Being simple and cost-effective, this method is advantageous for producing HAp implant materials with good properties/characteristics, aiming towards in vivo biomedical applications.
