Design of thermoresponsive hybrid nanoparticles for biomedical applications

Amphiphilic block copolymer assemblies have been widely investigated as drug delivery vehicles for biomedical applications. In the past decade, the development of controlled radical polymerization techniques and the polymerization induced self-assembly (PISA) process have provided straightforward synthetic tools to access a variety of self-assembled stimuli- responsive nanoparticles (NPs).

In the framework of the LabEx MiChem, a collaborative project has been proposed between the Institut Parisien de Chimie Moléculaire (IPCM) and the laboratory of PHysicochimie des Electrolytes et Nanosystèmes InterfaciauX (PHENIX), two complementary partners in the Labex MiChem. The polymer chemistry team of IPCM at Sorbonne University (SU), one of the pioneering team in the development of the PISA technique, has been developing new strategies to synthesize worm-like NPs directly in water using PISA [1–4] while the inorganic colloids team of PHENIX (SU) possesses solid expertise in the field of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) synthesis and characterization, recently applied in the biomedical field. [5–7]

The current project targets the design of novel thermosensitive magnetic filomicelles by PISA and their application to drug delivery. Indeed, it was evidenced in the literature that such anisotropic NPs presented enhanced drug-delivery along with an increased blood circulation time. Furthermore, the presence of such MNPs within thermosensitive NPs can provide targeting and remote drug delivery properties to the designed drug delivery system (DDS).

Required qualifications :

- A PhD in Polymer Chemistry or any related field with experience in macromolecular engineering using controlled radical polymerization (CRP) will be preferred. Alternatively, a strong background in the synthesis and characterization of thermosensitive polymers or hybrids would be a major asset for the success of the project.
- The applicant should be open to work at the interface of polymer chemistry, inorganic chemistry and biochemistry.
- A strong command of written and spoken English is recommended.
- Good communication, laboratory and organizational skills.
