Chemical oscillations in dispersed media : models and applications

Le séminaire aura lieu le mercredi 15/02/2012 de 13h30 à 14h30 au laboratoire PECSA (Bat. F, 7e étage, porte 754).

Résumé

Until the sixties chemical oscillations in homogeneous phase were thought to be impossible, mainly because of their apparent contradiction to the second law of thermodynamics ; after the pioneering work of Ilya Prigogine, the thermodynamics of far from equilibrium systems shed light on such curious and exotic phenomena and reactions like the Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) became popular and studied by many scientists all over the world. Nowadays, the BZ reaction represents the prototype model for chemical oscillations and its properties are exploited in several applications, from studying, for example, chemical signaling to characterizing chemical chaos. Moreover, as any other excitable medium, BZ reaction can support pulses and waves propagation when coupled with diffusion, and this makes it a useful tool for pattern formation applications.

The main subject of this talk will be the description of the behavior and the potential applications of the BZ reaction when coupled with organized reaction environments, such as micro emulsions, micelles, etc. emulsions,
